“I’m just not sure its worth the risk.”, André looks across at Grace, “The payout isn’t very good and the job is basically wetwork.”
“Fine, look I don’t want to argue about it. I feel like we owe Hippo the favor and I think we can manage the job without unnecessary fatalities.”, Grace stands up from the café table, “It looks like Jax is ready to move. It’ll work out, the rest of us will do the job and we’ll meet you back on our plane when it done.”
I’m trying to follow Jax through the crowd of scab laborers. It would be interesting to just sit back and watch, Jax goes from ‘out of my way asshole’ to ‘pardon me ma’am’ in the blink of an eye. Whichever one it is, it doesn’t seem to matter and the crowd parts before her. Unfortunately I’m cut off.
“Back of the line bitch!”, I hear an angry voice say as I accidentally nudged a tall man’s shoulder. I’m about to grab his wrist and knee him in the balls, when I hear Jax over the headset.
“You still have naira right Grace?”
“Use the naira, Grace”, I say mostly to myself subvocally. With the hand that was going for his wrist, I gently move his hand palm up, with the other hand I slip some naira into his hand and close it. Then I flash him the vulcan sign and say, “Live long and prosper!”
He looks from me to his closed hand, shrugs and says, “Guess I don’t have to be here any longer.”
Go figure, our targets are a couple of deckers. Not sure how I feel about handing them over to whoever is paying us. Their icons appearing has thrown my plans for a loop. I stay in VR and start exchanging data spikes with them after they spot me. I think both the deckers and I would prefer to be on the ground, none of us are doing a very good job. Finally one of them bricks himself when my firewall sends a stream of code back his way. The other sees his alone now and goes for a killing shot and bricks my new deck. Well I guess the old one will come in handy.
Before plugging in again, I sprint across the cabin to allow Roy to get out of the little shuttle thing. Looks like Allan and Jax have taken out a duelist drone, the place is a bit foggy so I guess Allan fired off the tear gas although Allan isn’t looking very good. I take cover and collapse behind a chair, going right back into VR. I brick the second decker when his icon goes still. Not sure what happened to him but I can’t take a chance that he’s faking something.
I get back up and start heading towards the cockpit just as Allan opens the door.
“Don’t shoot! I’m just here to fly the plane and look good.”, I hear the pilot say.
“Well you’re 0 for 2 then”, I say seeing as I took control of the plane away from him.
We make sure the two deckers get sent across to the other plane. I grab the two bricked decks. Now I have 4 decks to repair although only 3 are bricked. I’m really not trying to be a collector…
While all of us get into our parachutes including the pilot and the unconscious stewardess, I hear Allan and Roy arguing.
“They didn’t seem so bad”, Roy says, “They didn’t shoot at me once.”
“Yeah, well they shot me up pretty good!”, Allan growls. I’m getting a bit annoyed by their childishness. I’m not so sure I want to take a chance with the two guards. If we get separated during the jump, I wouldn’t want once of them to regain consciousness and come after us.
“Stop being so pig-headed Roy!”, I look at the expression on Roy’s face, “I uhmm, I mean I uhmm, didn’t mean it like that!”
Jax steps past me and starts giving Roy and Allan an earful. Then she turns around to me.
“He knows you didn’t kid. Let’s just all of us take a deep breath to calm down and clear our heads before jumping out of the plane.”
